HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The start of baseball season is rapidly approaching as Southern Miss prepares to host Purdue in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
First pitch is set for 4 p.m., however who will throw out that first pitch is still to be determined. Tenth-year head coach Scott Berry said he isn’t ready to name Friday’s starting pitcher but has “an idea” who will take the mound.
Berry expects senior Storme Cooper to start at shortstop, rounding out an infield that features freshman Danny Lynch at third-base, junior Matt Guidry at second-base, senior Hunter Slater at first-base and senior Cole Donaldson behind the plate.
At USM’s media day on January 23, Berry noted that he expects sophomore Gabe Montenegro to start in left field, senior Fred Franklin in centerfield and junior Matt Wallner in right field.
Berry singled out senior Stevie Powers, junior Walker Powell and Wallner as potential starting pitchers for the weekend rotation.
“We’ve got a pretty good idea of our personnel and the roles we’ve kind of put them in to get them ready to help us win,” Berry said. “But certainly, those roles change. I’m sure the first few games or even the first four weeks may tell us a lot about our team. I do know that every game is an opportunity to win and it’s an important opportunity, and that we need to do everything we can to win.”
