HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - As Matt Wallner gears up for his junior season at Southern Miss, he’ll do so on the Golden Spikes Award Watch list for the second straight year.
The award is handed out annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. Wallner is one of 55 players named to the watch list.
The outfielder finished last season with a .351 batting average and team-highs in home runs (16) and runs-batted-in (67).
USM expects a lot out from Wallner on the mound and from the plate in 2019.
“Just go out there and play,” Wallner said. “Because if I’m trying to hit .450 and 30 homers, 99 out of 100 times it’s probably not gonna happen. I just got to go out there and play the way I know how to play. Then, I think good things will come and I’ll have my best season yet.”
