HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - If you make less than $50,000 a year, you are eligible to get your taxes done for free in the Pine Belt.
“It helps the community as well as it just makes us feel good because we are doing a volunteer service for our community,” said Tanya Dillion with Pearl River Valley Opportunity.
Pearl River Valley Opportunity partnered with AARP to offer free tax services to several cities in the Pine Belt, including Hattiesburg and Laurel.
These are IRS-approved and are staffed with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly preparers.
“We do it to help our community," Dillon said. “Instead of going out paying to have their returns done, we process returns for free. We E-File or they can do paper returns.”
Dillion said the application process is not hard, you just need to make sure to bring all of your paper work.
“They come in with a valid, state issued ID, social security cards for themselves and any dependents they are claiming and a copy of all tax documents," Dillon said. “If they are in school, we need a 10-98 form or their student loan interest paper."
Anyone is welcome to fill out an application. There are offices in Columbia and New Augusta.
