HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ University of Southern Mississippi post player Kelsey Jones was Conference USA women’s basketball Freshman of the Week.

Jones, a Starkville native, averaged 11 points and 10 rebounds as USM swept a pair of road games at Western Kentucky University and Marshall University last week.

Jones also averaged 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocked shots.

“It's so fun to watch these young players grow right before our eyes,” USM women’s basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis said in a statement. “Her ability to score the basketball and her ability to rebound that gives us a mainstay inside. We just need her to continue to make progress and I think she'll be a true difference maker for us down the stretch."

Jones posted her third double-double of the year with 14 points and 13 rebounds in USM’s 69-56 victory at WKU. She went 4-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-6 from the free-throw line.

She followed that but hitting 3-of-6 shots that led to an eight-point, seven-rebound effort in the Lady Eagles’ 64-52 win at Marshall.

LORMAN, MS (WDAM) _ The University of Southern Mississippi women’s tennis team is off to its best start since 2016 after logging its third consecutive 4-0 victory, downing Alcorn State University to win its first road match of the season.

The USM team of Rikeetha Pereira and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan won its third consecutive match at No. 2 doubles, and the Lady Eagles clinched the doubles point when the Lady Braves had to forfeit at No. 3.

Despite already locking up the doubles point, USM’s Arina Amaning and Tjasa Jerse played through to a 6-2 win over Anastasia Vaganova and Stefany Grlj at No. 1 doubles.

The Lady Eagles (3-0) clinched the win with Katia de la Garza taking out Grlj, 6-0, 6-0, without dropping a single game at No. 4 singles, Yazgan downing Klavdija Bukovec, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and picking up a forfeit at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Eagles will host West Alabama University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
