HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Friday night marked the start of the 192nd Council of Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
The evening started off with song and praise and was followed with the first business session of the weekend.
"Every Diocese in the Episcopal Church has an annual meeting. In Mississippi, it has turned out to be a three-day event. Not all Dioceses do that. We are required to come together and conduct the official business of the church,” said Rev. Susan Bear, rector of the Church of Ascension.
The purpose of this annual meeting is to conduct the business of the Episcopal Church, but it is also about creating a reunion for members.
"Mississippi has just made it a tremendous tradition to be a working reunion. This is just a chance for us to just get together and praise God,” Bear said.
Over 600 people from all over the state are expected to join in on the fellowship of this annual event over the three-day course.
"It’s strengthening for us to come together. We build bonds of friendship every year through our committees and our fellowships,”said Rev. Marian Fortner, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church.
If you missed out on Friday night’s activities, you still have another chance to attend. It will continue throughout the weekend. Saturday registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.
Everyone is invited to attend the Sunday morning closing service at 10 a.m. It will be at the lake Terrance Convention Center.
