Columbia’s assistant police chief fired; four others depart

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Columbia’s assistant chief of police Rita Pickering was fired Tuesday in a closed session between city aldermen, the mayor and the city attorney.

In that same meeting, the board accepted the resignations of three officers and terminated another officer, parting ways with five police officers total, effective Tuesday.

City officials did confirm that the three officers to resign were investigator Justin Martin, Lt. David Ezell and patrolman Dylan Powell.

Columbia Mayor Justin McKenzie, Police Chief Michael Kelly and city attorney Lawrence Hahn declined to comment, saying they refuse to comment on city personnel matters.

Pickering is being represented by Tim Ferris, a Hattiesburg attorney.

WDAM reached out to them but have received no comment so far.
