HATTIESBURG MS (WDAM) -A Hattiesburg church is continuing a Super Bowl tradition that’s not about football. Instead, it’s about really good food.
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension hosted its annual gumbo sale Saturday.
More than 1,000 quarts were made by church members, based on a special church recipe.
The church does this twice each year at Thanksgiving and right before the Super Bowl.
Funds raised go to local outreach projects.
“It crosses generations, we just enjoy camaraderie of making the gumbo and selling it and meeting people in the community,” said Susan Bear, church rector.
“It’s going to be eaten today, maybe all of it eaten today,” said Ashley Freeman.
She bought several quarts of gumbo.
“We always get at least two, at least two, last time, I got four.”
The gumbo sales started about 30 years ago.
