ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) _ A 12-foot jumper with 3 seconds to play by sophomore guard Winceton Edwards sent the game into overtime and two free throws by freshman forward Zachariah Malone with 5.9 seconds left allowed Jones College to cement a 71-69 South Division victory over East Central Community College Thursday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
East Central led by 10 points at halftime and still led by six, 61-56, with less than 3 minutes left in the second half.
But Jones sophomore forward Tirus Smith scored low and sophomore forward Galen Alexander connected on a floater in the lane to get the deficit down to 61-60 with 50 seconds to play.
East Central sophomore guard Josh Green knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with 13.9 seconds to push the Warriors’ lead back to two points before Edwards came up with his game-tying shot.
In overtime, East Central led 64-62 before Smith threw down a dunk and then put back a missed shot with 2:05 left in the extra period. Two free throws by freshman guard Casey Smith Jr. bumped Jones’ lead to 68-64. East Central got back within two points with a pair of free throws.
The teams traded single free throws before Malone made a pair of free shots to put the Bobcats up 71-67, giving them enough of cushion to absorb a last-second basket by East Central freshman guard Nick Preyer.
East Central 7-6, 0-4 South Division) got 18 points from sophomore guard Roti Ware, 13 each from Preyer and freshman forward JaQuaris Smith and 10 from sophomore guard Josh Green.
Jones (7-4, 3-1) was led by 15 points from sophomore guard Gavin Alexander, 12 points from Tirus Smith and 10 points from freshman guard Kenneth Rogers.
The Bobcats will take to the road at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, visiting Southwest Mississippi Community College.
