HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Winter Weather is making its way into the Pine Belt and MDOT is urging folks in our area to travel safely as the temperatures begin to drop.
“The forecast right now, it shows a lot of cold. We’ll continue to monitor. We have maintenance crews that will be ready to go for any conditions we might have whether it be ice or snow or severe rains like we’ve had the last couple of weeks,” Jones said.
Cape Jones a district Maintenance engineer with MDOT drivers told to be prepared to “SLOW DOWN.”
“Slow down. Pay attention to the roadway surface as you’re driving and in icy conditions just stay off the road if possible. Only travel if you have to,” said Jones.
In addition to slowing down, Jones said drivers should pay close attention to road conditions.
“In any ice event the road surface and the road getting slick is your number one concern and we have multiple ways of deicing roadways and bridges and we’ll have our people ready to go if those conditions do occur,” said Jones.
When there’s inclement weather, MDOT sends out several alerts to keep the public informed about any updates when it comes to road closures, delays, or severe conditions. Jones says it would be wise to be attentive.
“Please pay attention to weather alerts traffic alerts that m-dot puts out as well as the other media puts out those alerts,” Jones said.
And Last but certainly not least, AVOID any Distractions while driving.
“Don’t Text and drive. You know stay off those cell phones while you’re on the road. And be conscious of our people out on the road as well and please drive safely and watch out for those guys trying to keep those roads safe for the traveling public,” said Jones.
