COLLINS, MS (WDAM) - The president of the Mississippi Firefighters Association is warning us about a phone scam.

John Pope, who is also chief of the Collins Fire Department, said scammers have been calling people across the state asking for donations for his organization and other groups, some of which don’t exist.

He said don’t fall for it.

“We’re just trying to get the word out to let people know that these groups are not valid groups and we’re trying to prevent people from being conned or scammed into giving money to a group that is not going toward the intended purpose that they thought they were giving to," said Pope.

Pope said callers claim to be representing the following groups:

  • Mississippi Firefighters Association
  • Mississippi Fallen Firefighters Memorial
  • Mississippi Fallen Firefighters Association
  • Mississippi Firefighters and EMS Charitable Fund
  • Mississippi Firefighters Fund Charity

He also said he’s personally been called about a half dozen time by these scammers.
