COVINGTON COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Covington County will soon host some much-needed firefighter training.
Supervisors Friday approved the first basic certification class in nearly a decade.
County fire coordinator Drew Craft and other trainers will conduct the class, which begins in March.
They also approved funding to upgrade the county’s training facility.
“It’s either for new firefighters or firefighters who’ve been with their departments that just haven’t had the opportunity to go through the class,” said Craft. “By the state, everybody is required to have that basic certification and we’ve just go low numbers of firefighters that are certified period, so we’re trying to get everybody that’s currently on right now up to Firefighters One level certification.”
Craft said about two dozen firefighters will take part in that training, which could last about three months.
