BLUE MOUNTAIN, MS (WDAM) _ A basket by junior forward Rachael Thompson with less than a minute to play put William Carey University ahead to stay Thursday as the Lady Crusaders took a 69-65 victory at Blue Mountain College.
The Lady Toppers jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead before Carey roared back to take a 49-48 lead after three periods on a jumper by freshman guard Michaela Terry with 4 seconds left in the period.
The teams swapped leads six times in the final quarter before Thompson stepped up and gave Carey the lead for good.
Thompson led the Lady Crusaders (5-6, 4-3 Southern States Athletic Conference) with 12 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Junior guard Danyelle Lewis had 13 points and three assists and Terry finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Junior forward Destiny Williams had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while senior guard Shantavis Hughes had 10 points.
Blue Mountain (1-11, 0-6), which dropped its 10th consecutive game, got 21 points, six rebounds and five steals from senior guard Marlee Hatcher and 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots from sophomore center Mackenzie Lane.
Carey will visit Bethel University (13-3, 5-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday in McKenzie, Tenn.
