HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dawn Gillis didn’t know that her own battle with breast cancer would lead her to be a fighter for other women suffering with the disease.
“I’m a breast cancer survivor, and I have a lot of friends who were diagnosed,” Gillis said.
The cancer diagnoses of one friend in particular affected Gillis the most.
“My very, very best friend was diagnosed years ago, and unfortunately she didn’t make it," said Gillis.
Gillis said she couldn’t stand by and watch another woman go through the hardships of cancer. In 2004, she started the Waiting for a Cure Foundation. She said the foundation helps women with anything centered around their diagnoses.
“We help breast cancer patients with their medical expenses, their mastectomy products, offer support," Gillis said.
She said they work with clinics and doctors to find women who need financial help with care.
“We particularly like to target those women who do not have insurance, because it gets really, really costly, and there are so many women out there that won’t get a mammogram because they say they can’t afford it,” Gillis said.
Gillis said she wants women to know they can afford support, care and a friend through the Waiting for a Cure Foundation. If you would like to contact Gillis for help, join the foundation or be a part of its fundraisers, call 601-620-6421.
