ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) _ Keyara Jones scored 19 points and Maya Jones added 13, including the game-winning free throw, as No. 11 Jones College upset fourth-ranked Chipola College 72-71 Friday afternoon at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
Maya Jones hit one of two free throws to give the Lady Bobcats (9-1) a three-point lead with 40.5 seconds to play before the real nail-biting began.
After a bucket by the Lady Indians (15-1) cut the lead to one point, Maya Jones was fouled, but missed both free throws. Chipola came down and missed a 3-pointer, but the Lady Bobcats were called for a foul with 0.5 seconds left to play.
But Valerie Nesbitt failed to make either shot and the Lady Bobcats (9-1) escaped with a signature victory.
The Lady Indians led 63-57 with just a little more than 6 minutes to play, but Jones battled back and took a 64-63 lead with 3:34 showing when Breonca Ducksworth made two free throws.
After a 3-pointer by Chipola, Maya Jones hit two foul shots to tie the game and then put back an offensive rebound to give JC a 68-66 lead with 2:34 to play.
After a Chipola miss, Jones was fouled at the other end, and the Lady Indians were whistled for a technical after protesting the call on Jones.
Keyara Jones made the two technical free throws and Maya Jones made one free throw to give the Lady Bobcats a 71-66 lead with 1:31 remaining.
A Chipola 3-pointer chipped the lead to 71-69 before Maya Jones hit the final shot to set the stage for the game’s ending.
Destiny Haymer finished with 12 points for the Lady Bobcats, while Courtajia Sanders led Chipola with a game-high 26 points. Nesbitt added 18 and Lyric Turner had 11.
The Lady Bobcats return to Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges’ South Division play when they welcome Hinds Community College for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff Thursday.
