HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ Senior swingman Leito Holloway’s 3-pointer ignited a game-ending 17-7 run as No. 22 William Carey University topped the University of Mobile 68-55 Thursday night at Clinton Gymnasium.
The Crusaders (9-4, 5-0 Southern States Athletic Conference) won for the eighth time in nine games, setting up a clash of conference unbeatens Saturday, when No. 8 Stillman College (13-0, 5-0) visits for a 4 p.m. tip.
Thursday, the Crusaders started out in a rush, running out to a 19-point lead before settling for a 36-24 halftime lead.
The Rams (5-6, 2-3) rallied in the second half, pulling within 51-48 with 6 minutes, 13 seconds, to play. But Holloway’s big basket started Carey’s game-sealing stretch.
Senior forward Branden Sheppard powered the Crusaders, posting a double-double with a game-high 16 points, 15 rebounds and two steals.
Senior guard Adrian Williams scored 12 and junior swingman Brandon Cranford added 10. Holloway scored nine points and had four rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and two steals.
Mobile was led by junior guard Will Stanford’s 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Junior guard Tim Collins added 12 points, junior guard Darius Curry had eight points and five rebounds and senior forward hauled down a team-best nine rebounds.
