COLLINS, MS (WDAM) - A marker will be unveiled at the Covington County Courthouse next week to celebrate the county’s bicentennial.
The marker is similar to others erected by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, but this one was purchased by the Covington County Board of Supervisors and the Covington County Genealogical and Historical Society.
Covington County was founded on Jan. 5, 1819.
The county courthouse was built in 1907.
“The courthouse has never had a marker, it was designated a historical landmark in the 1990′s, but it’s never had an official marker,” said Nell Cobb, president of the Covington County Genealogical and Historical Society.
“We felt like it was past due for the building to have a marker,” Cobb said. “But, it’s one of the projects for our bicentennial year, this whole year, we’re going to be doing things, having educational programs and recognizing historic things for the bicentennial of the county.”
The marker will be unveiled at 9 a.m. on Jan. 7.
