Hattiesburg may move U.S. Postal operations to Gulfport March 6, 2009 at 5:36 PM CST - Updated July 3 at 10:45 AM HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A plan to move all outgoing mail operations to Gulfport to save the U.S. Postal Service money is being fought by local workers. Outgoing mail may once again be a thing of the past for Hattiesburg if a new proposed processing proposal is adopted. The plan is to move outgoing mail operations to Gulfport, which could save the Postal Service as much as $444,000 a year. According to Postal Service officials, the move would cost four jobs in Hattiesburg. Members of the Committee for the Preservation of the Hattiesburg Postmark disagree, saying the economic impact to Hattiesburg would be substantial, and current standards would not be met. Employees and the public will be able to comment on the plan on March 12 at the Forrest County Multipurpose Center . If the proposal is approved, the plan would go to Washington D.C. for final approval.
