HATTIESBURG, Miss (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Police have arrested a suspect in Monday's May Avenue shooting.
Joseph Thames, 33, of Hattiesburg was taken into custody after Hattiesburg officers responded to the area of John Street near May Avenue after reports of shots fired in the area.
Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like gun fire, but could not identify a shooter. Around the same time, police received information a male subject had responded to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the back.
Officers met with the reported victim and learned there had been an argument near the intersection of John Street and May Avenue which escalated to a shooting. The victim was shot once in the back.
The victim identified the shooter as Thames, who was arrested and transported to the Forrest County Regional Jail where he was charged with one count of aggravated assault.
The victim’s injuries were not life threatening, and he was later released from the hospital. Police are still investigating the shooting to determine the motive.
