Laurel honors Price as part of Black History Month

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The city of Laurel kicked off its Black History Month celebration Tuesday.

For the entire month of February, the city of Laurel will honor the Price family.

Tuesday, dozens of citizens gathered to celebrate Leontyne Price's birthday. The opera singer was born Feb. 10, 1927 in Laurel. Price currently lives in New York.

"Leontyne is probably the one citizen that has gone the farthest than anybody that we know in the city of Laurel, and not only Leontyne, but her brother as well," said Lula Cooley of Laurel.

Laurel will host a weekend-long celebration in honor of the Price family on Feb. 20.
