Grand jury to release findings in Johnson case

GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The George County Grand Jury is expected to release its findings Thursday in the death of high school football star Billy Joe Johnson.

After an all-day hearing Monday which included testimony from 30 witnesses, the grand jury said it will reveal its conclusions Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the George County Courthouse.

Johnson, 17, died December 8 of a shotgun blast to the head. Authorities said the wound was self-inflicted.

He had been stopped by a deputy sheriff for a routine traffic violation, and the officer said he was in the process of checking Johnson's license when he heard a gunshot. He said he turned around and found Johnson lying outside his truck with a shotgun on top of him.

Johnson's family does not believe the football player took his own life. Thursday, the grand jury will announce whether it found any evidence of criminal wrongdoing in connection with Johnson's death.
