Marion County to erect new tornado sirens

The Marion County Civil Defense Office has been given the go ahead to install four new tornado sirens.

The Columbia Board of Alderman approved the office to use a FEMA grant for the purchase and installation of the sirens.

Currently, Marion County has one siren in downtown Columbia. Civil Defense Director Charlie Conerly requested 23 new sirens, and was approved for four.

Conerly said he wants the schools to have a better alert system.

He is requesting to place one siren on school grounds, but the Columbia Board of Education must approve the installation.
