Testimony begins concerning high school football player's death

The George County grand jury began hearing testimony today in the death of a high school football star.

Billy Joe Johnson, 18, died December 8 of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities said it appeared he took his own life after being stopped for a routine traffic violation.

Johnson's family members disagree, and his mother and father testified Monday when the grand jury took up the case.

Friends and family said Johnson had too much to live for to commit suicide, and that he had football offers from 20 schools including LSU. and Auburn.

The deputy who stopped Johnson said he was checking Johnson's license at his patrol car when he heard a gunshot. He said he turned around and saw Johnson lying outside his truck with a shotgun on top of him.
