HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg police arrested several people, including employees, at the Coney Island Cafe today (Monday) on charges of illegal gambling.

Members of the Hattiesburg Police Department's Crime Suppression Team seized around $34,000 in cash.

Officials said people were calling in bids on professional football games and NCAA college games and dropping off bids at the restaurant.

Members of Hattiesburg's Crime Suppression Team have been investigating alleged gambling activity at the Coney Island Cafe for the past six months, and Monday morning it all came to a head with the arrests of several people.

Officials are not revealing the exact number of arrests, or names - citing a continuing investigation. However they say some of those taken into custody were restaurant employees and all arrests took place at the cafe.

Police also seized money from the residences of those involved.

All nine members of the team worked the case.

Each person arrested was charged with gambling - a misdemeanor.
