HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Forrest County is another step closer to awarding a contract for a new county jail, and supervisors said Thursday the county will be saving money.Bids were opened with base bids ranging between $23 and $24 million.
Because this was the second round of bids, the county is expected to save taxpayers between $2 and 3 million.
The first round of bids were thrown out late last year after supervisors said the quotes came in during a time when gas and steel prices were at an all time high. Now that prices have dropped, supervisors say the new round of bids reflect a more cost effective approach.
The county is under federal mandate to build a new jail, and supervisors expect to award the contract within the next two months.
