Widow donates Medal of Honor to Camp Shelby museum

Visitors to the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby will soon be able to see the original Medal of Honor received by late marine hero and Hattiesburg resident Jack Lucas.

That medal, along with other honors and some photographs, will be on display at the museum in a few days. Lucas' widow, Ruby lucas, presented the items to the museum Thursday afternoon. Jack lucas died in June of cancer at the age of 80. In 1945, he became the youngest marine to ever win the Medal of Honor for heroism at the battle of Iwo Jima.

"Jack loved this museum, so i think this is where he would want this to be," said Lucas. "I want our kids to know what this is and that our freedom is not free."

Lucas' medal and a few other items are on loan. The photographs have been donated to the museum. These items will be exhibited beginning Jan. 16.
