Lumberton mayor says no to interim police chief

The mayor of Lumberton has vetoed the board's choice for interim police chief.

The city's board of alderman voted officer Chris Franklin as the interim chief, but mayor Larry Strahan vetoed the decision saying Franklin did not have proper certification with him at the time.

The mayor went on to say he was unsure if he would have accepted Franklin's nomination even if he was able to show documentation.

Maurice Hammond was suspended as police chief after federal charges accused him of filing false claims after Hurricane Katrina.

Hammond pleaded not guilty to eight counts of fraud including allegedly receiving almost $20,000 in federal money.
