Pathologist says cause of Johnson's death difficult to determine

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - An attorney says an independent pathologist couldn't determine if the shotgun blast that killed a high school football star was self-inflicted.

Billey Joe Johnson died after being pulled over Dec. 8 in George County. Authorities say the 17-year-old George County High tailback was wanted for an attempted burglary and shot himself.

His family isn't convinced.

They hired attorney Jerome Carter and an independent pathologist.

Carter says the pathologist could not determine if the blast was self-inflicted "because portions of the wound were extracted."

Carter says he hopes the portions of the boy's head are preserved in the state crime lab.

Crime lab officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
