Laurel Fire Department denied beds

The Laurel Fire Department is in desperate need of mattresses, but the city isn't willing to fork up any money to cover the expense.

Tuesday, the council failed to approve Laurel Fire Chief David Chance's request to amend the fire budget in the amount of $6,000.

Chance said his department needs 15 sets of twin-size mattresses. But, the Budget Chairman Tony Wheat said each department was ordered to submit a list of department priorities.

Chance said he was unaware the cost for the mattresses was not on his list of priorities, but is somewhat hopeful the city will meet the needs of his department.

The council said there has been no increase in sales tax revenue this fiscal year to pay for the mattresses.
