Lucedale teen's suicide may have been accidental

Lucedale authorities are not saying if the fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound of a star running back for George County High School was an accident or suicide.

Billey Joe Johnson, 16, shot himself with a shotgun shortly after 6 a.m. Monday after being stopped in Lucedale by a deputy sheriff for apparently running a stop sign.

We are told the officer was sitting in his patrol car checking out Johnson's license when he heard a gunshot. J

Johnson was found by the driver's side door with the shotgun on top of him. The junior tailback for had rushed for more than 4,000 yards in his career and had offers from nearly every major university in the South.

He was scheduled to be in Ellisville today as part of WDAM's All Area High School Football Banquet.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations has taken over jurisdiction in the case.
