Future of Lumberton police chief still unsure

Lumberton Police Chief Maurice Hammond says he is innocent of eight felony counts of Hurricane Katrina fraud.

Hammond was arraigned in Federal Court in Hattiesburg Monday, where he pleaded not guilty.

He will stand trial on Feb. 17. Hammond is accused of filing a false disaster relief claim with FEMA and receiving over $19,000 of federal money.

His future as police chief of Lumberton will be discussed Tuesday night at the board of aldermen's regular meeting.
