Housing panel to meet in Delta

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - The Senate Housing Committee meets next

week in the Mississippi Delta, a region where affordable housing is

The legislative committee will hold a hearing Monday, beginning

at 6 p.m. at the Greenville Higher Education Center.

According to the U.S. Census, nearly 1 in 3 Washington County

households shoulder a "housing cost burden," which means they

spend more than 30 percent of their incomes on housing.

Sen. Robert Jackson of Marks said that some residents try to

save money on housing by living in poorly maintained homes or

crowding too many people into one residence.

Members of the committee will spend Monday visiting

organizations across the Delta that help residents find affordable

housing before holding the hearing.
