Columbia teen arrested for murdering mother's boyfriend

A Columbia teenager has been arrested in Georgia, charged with murdering his mother's boyfriend.

John David Smith, 19, was arrested Sunday night in Gainesville, Ga. Marion County Sheriff's investigators named Smith as the suspect who shot and killed 55-year-old Joe Von Stringer, a Marion County forester and timber man.

Stringer was found shot to death Sunday afternoon at his office on Hwy 98. Investigators received tips Smith was traveling to a friend's house in Georgia in the victim's truck.

Smith was arrested about 11 p.m. Sunday and is now awaiting extradiction to Mississippi. Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting

    As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
