New Forrest County jail to cost more than expected

Building a new jail in Forrest County may be more expensive than supervisors are willing to pay.

County leaders were told Thursday a projected interest rate would be 1 percent higher due to the country's financial crisis, which would amount to $2 to 3 million dollars on top of the projected $20 to 30 million dollar project.

The county is under a court mandate to build a new jail because the current downtown facility is outdated. The county already accepted eight bids from contractors, but have yet to award a contract.
