Jackson man charged in teenager's murder

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A 21-year-old Jackson man is being held in

jail on a murder charge in the stabbing death of a teenager.

Authorities say Conerly Chapman was taken into custody Friday.

He's accused of stabbing 18-year-old Francois Gasnell to death on

Sept. 7, just one block from Gasnell's home.

Chapman has also been charged with aggravated assault and

strong-arm robbery. Police say he's a suspect in a June 2007 purse

snatching in northeast Jackson.

A 61-year-old woman told police she was carrying groceries to

her car in a store parking lot when a vehicle pulled up behind her.

She said a man got out, demanded her purse and punched her in the

face until she let go.

Chapman is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center.
