Jeff Davis County prison petition ruled valid

A petition demanding a vote on funding for a new jail in Jeff Davis county has been ruled valid.

The Chancery Clerk's Office verified Monday that 1,694 registered voters signed the petition, 194 more than was needed.

The board of supervisors wants to issue millions of dollars in bonds to build a new county jail, but residents want the decision made by voters in a special election.

Supervisors say they'll get public input before doing anything else. A public hearing is set for Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Jeff Davis County Courthouse in Prentiss.
