Citizens of Lumberton call for mayor's resignation

A group of citizens in Lumberton asked for resignation of their mayor at the board of aldermen meeting Tuesday.

Residents accused Mayor Larry Strahan of being a racist for calling the three black aldermen "monkey" in a conversation between Strahan and a Lumberton police officer.

Strahan vehemently denies that he made a racial slur. He claims he was just using a figure of speech by saying "get the monkey off my back." Residents claim they have the mayor's comments on tape, and that is not what he said.

Some also allege the mayor of ordering deputy clerks to withhold documents which are menat to be accessible to the public.

Strahan said all the allegations are false. WDAM will provide more details as the story develops.
