Laurel faces deficit related to garbage pick up

The city of Laurel could be facing another deficit after council members voted garbage rates remain at $15 and 25 cents a month.

Laurel City Council voted four to three against increasing garbage rates. For the last several weeks, citizens have been complaining about the city increasing the rates while decreasing the frequency of pick ups to once a week.

Councilman Tony Wheat said the decision not to increase rates could cost the city dearly as
state law prohibits the sanitation fund to operate in a deficit without the council taking steps to solve the problem.

Wheat said he hoped the council will hold a budget meeting within the next week or so.
