Hattiesburg Police bust alleged gambling ring

Hattiesburg Police raided a suspected illegal gambling operation in east Hattiesburg around noon Sunday.

Around 60 people were detained for questioning after police arrested the owners of Hyatt's Brothers Discount Grocery and Seafood at 819 Edwards St. Eight individuals were taken into custody.

Police said an alleged illegal football gambing ring was operating out of the establishment wherean undisclosed amount of cash was confiscated in addition to paperwork, ledgers and other evidence.

    Hattiesburg police are investigating an “accidental” death at the Midtown construction site off Hardy St. near the USM campus. Officials confirm a 45-year-old construction worker has died.

    Attorney General Jim Hood announced the Thursday conviction of a Jackson man on three counts of murder.  A Hinds County jury convicted Javondus Beasley of one county of capital murder and two counts of second-degree murder after a three-day trial, according to a DA press release. Beasley was convicted in the shooting death of 29-year-old Eldra Gibson, 25-year-old Sherrod Brown and 22-year-old Ashley Taylor on the night of Oct. 30 in a Jackson home.
