We'd like to commend director Herlon Pierce and the board of the Rails to Trails biking, walking, jogging path for installing security cameras and bringing a plain clothes security officer on board.
The trail opened through the Pinebelt countryside after 41 miles of unused rail roads were paved for recreational purposes in the year 2000. Since then, there have only been 3 assaults on the trail, but the tolerance for such incidences is zero.
People need a place to enjoy our beautiful South Mississippi countryside and get exercise without fear. The cameras and security will be strategically placed, where the chance of those causing mischief is very high indeed.
While there are no guarantees, these actions along with cooperation from Crime Stoppers in offering a reward for information leading to the apprehension of the perpetrators of the last incident will go a long way toward sending the message that Rails to Trails will not be allowed to become a venue for the bad guys to ply their trade.
I'm Jim Cameron, write and let us know what you think.
