Mendenhall police chief pleads guilty to assault

Mendenhall police chief James Sullivan has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault charges related to accusations that he sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Sullivan entered the plea Monday shortly before his trial was to begin in Simpson County Circuit Court. He will have to give up his job.

A judge sentenced Sullivan to four years in prison. Sullivan also was fined $2,000.

In April, a mistrial was declared in Sullivan's retrial on four counts of having sex with the teen. In 2007, a jury deadlocked on the charges.

Sullivan, who is paid $32,000 a year, placed himself on paid leave in March 2007 after being charged. He was elected in 2005.
