Man charged with child abuse acquitted

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A Southaven man indicted for allegedly

squeezing his 4-month-old daughter and causing four of her ribs to

fracture has been acquitted of child abuse charges.

A DeSoto County jury found 19-year-old Brian D. Barito innocent

Friday after hearing two days of testimony.

In a written statement to police, Barito acknowledged he

squeezed the infant, but he said he did not realize he had injured

her. He also said his wife called him at work hours later to say

the infant fell from a swing and may be hurt.

Testimony from two doctors - one who treated the infant and

another who examined her medical records - agreed that the

squeezing or a fall could have caused the infant's injuries.
