Lawsuit filed in beer shooting case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Jackson store clerk charged with murder

in the shooting death of a man who allegedly stole beer is now

facing a lawsuit.

J&S Food Mart clerk Sarbrinder Pannu is charged with murder and

shooting into an occupied vehicle. On August 17, police say

36-year-old James Hawthorne went inside the store, grabbed beer and

ran out without paying.

Pannu allegedly followed Hawthorne outside and shot him in the

head and shoulder. Hawthorne, who had gotten into his vehicle, lost

control and crashed into a gas pump.

A lawsuit has been filed in Hinds County Circuit Court against

the 31-year-old store clerk on behalf of the dead man's two minor


Pannu is out of jail on a $50,000 bond.

The lawsuit doesn't specify the amount of damages sought.
