Barbour says Medicaid miscalculation brings refund

Governor Haley Barbour says Mississippi's Medicaid budget problems have been solved.

Barbour says a Medicaid employee was crunching numbers this summer and found a mistake made in October 2003 under a previous administration.

Barbour says the federal government agreed last week that Mississippi has been using some incorrect figures in part of its complicated Medicaid formula for nearly five years.

Barbour said at a news conference Monday that the state is getting a refund of more than $92 million. The state's portion of the Medicaid budget for the fiscal year that began July 1 was about $90 million short.

Barbour says the refund erases that shortfall. However, Barbour says lawmakers will still have to come up with the $90 million next fiscal year.
