Southern Miss sets up scholarship in wake of settlement

Southern Miss officials confirmed Friday they have set up and funded a scholarship in the name of an alumnus who died in 2004 after a drinking game.

Sammy Broadhead, a Sigma Nu Alum, then 25, died after a game of beer pong.

The USM graduate from Meridian collasped from high levels of alcohol in his blood stream. Broadhead had returned to his old fraternity for a party.

HIs mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the fraternity and the university, and an out-of-court settlement was recently reached.

The Broadhead scholarship will be for a Meridian Junior College graduate who wants to continue his or her education at USM.
