Lumberton mayor vetoes budget

City leaders in Lumberton will have to take a hard look into planning for the future after their mayor vetoed the city's next fiscal year budget proposal.

Mayor Larry Strahan said the proposed budget only passed with a three-to-two vote from the board, and he feels it is not in line with reality.

The mayor acknowledges tensions between leaders. and said such concerns should not be allowed to get in the way of the city's future.

Strahan says some board members aren't taking into consideration the public's needs, adding one of his major concerns is wasteful spending.

A city budget must be approved by Sept. 15; if not, Strahan said the board will become personally liable for any money spent by the city. So far, there has been no call to rework the budget.
