Investigation continues into hazing incident at USM

Usm Police are investigating a possible hazing incident involving Greek organizations which caused two female students to be hospitalized.

University Police Chief Bob Hopkins said both females were treated for alcohol-related illnesses. One of those female students remains in the hospital with alcohol poisioning.

The parent of one of the females reported the incident to police on Friday. Officials said an event took place last week which led to the alcohol-related hospitalizations. Investigators are trying to determine if the incident is the result of a hazing ritual between fraternities and sororities.

"Well, we're looking at it in several areas," said Hopkings. "Not only hazing but school disciplinary issues, possible criminal charges. But hazing is one of those crimes we're looking at."

Hopkins expects charges to be filed soon. He said hazing is a crime which is not tolerated by the university.
