USM begins bicycle initiative

Southern Miss is adopting a new plan to shape up its staff and students and ease traffic congestion on campus.

The new initiative is called Eagle Bikes, where black and gold bikes will be available outside of campus buildings for people to use when travelling to classes and university buildings.

The Student Government Association and the President's Office are spearheading the new initiative. President Martha saunders said the program will encourage the campus to use more environmentally friendly transportation.

"One of the things we thought was an easy thing to do to keep traffic down a bit and ease some of the parking stresses and to help people be healthier was to provide them with bicycles," said Saunders.

The program will start off with a few bikes people can use and then drop off at their destination for the next traveler.
