Forrest Co. officials say tax hike comes with new jail

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - A property tax increase appears ahead

for Forrest County residents as county supervisors examine budget

issues related to plans for a new jail.

Supervisors plan a public hearing on the proposed 2008-09 budget

next month. Property taxes could increase by 2.97 mills, meaning

the total tax bill on a property assessed at $100,000 would

increase by $28.80 next year.

Board President Charles Mills says he expects to hear complaints

from taxpayers and he can understand that.

Sheriff Billy McGee says a rough cost estimate by the architect

designing the new law enforcement complex is $25 million to $30

Officials say the county is under a court order to build a jail

and attempts to find other funding sources have been unsuccessful.
