Laurel breaks ground on new middle school

A $16 million new middle school is coming to the city of Laurel.

Officials held their ground breaking ceremony on the grandview drive site Monday. It will be a state-of-the-art school housing grades six through eight. School officials said this has been a long-awaited project.
"It's been along time since we've had a new school built and we are looking forward to entering the age of technology, to have better facilities for our kids, and to look at years down the road at a legacy of great education in the city of Laurel," said Mike Axton, vice president of the school board.

The new middle school will include a student plaza.
