Officials urge residents to avoid intersection in Hattiesburg

Hub City motorists will now face a detour at the intersection of Hardy Street and Hwy 49.

During the reconstruction, which will last about eight days, travelers going east and west on Hardy Street will be detoured to alternate routes. Traffic on Hwy 49 going north and south will be reduced to a single lane.

Hattiesburg's Public Services Director Bennie Sellers said crews are replacing asphalt at the intersection with a high-strength concrete. Sellers said the new concrete will be extremely durable.

"So actually it's a concrete that will cure very rapidly and after 24 hours you can actually open back up to traffic," said Sellers. "What they will be doing on Hardy street from 25th to 27th that will all be all be concrete as it is out west. There will be the same thing on 49."

Despite signs alerting motorists about the detours, transportation officials advise commuters to avoid the area during this construction phase.
